Teenage vampires suck at high school

After two years of being on the run, novice Rosemarie “Rose” Hathaway and her best friend, Princess Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir, have been found by guardians and are being brought back to high school. The school, St. Vladimir’s Academy, just so happens to be a boarding school for mortal vampires, moroi, and half human- half moroi dhampir children. Faced with typical teenaged-vampire drama, psychos that leave blood messages and dead animals in Lissa’s room and strenuous novice training, Rose’s head is spinning. To top it all off, Rose falls for her older mentor, Guardian Dimitri Belikov.

Rose’s power-packed punches and stone cold wit bring humor and action to a marvelously written novel. Author Richelle Mead spins a smooth but quick paced story about how Rose sorts out the problems that come her way, not to mention the ones she causes.

Weaving together the modern do-gooder vampire and the classic terrorizing monster with the average hormone riddled American high school, Mead exceeded my expectations on how well someone could write an interesting teen-vamp book. The addicting storyline continues on through five more novels and the series is marvelously illustrated with graphic novels. The first book has even been turned into a movie.
