In early September, Mauro Kolobaric, an Australian Consulate General stationed in Washington, D.C., visited DHS. An assembly was held during which he introduced himself and gave a presentation about Australia.
Kolobaric has been stationed in Rome, Budapest, Caracas, Samoa and D.C. He says that he didn’t know much about Oklahoma before he visited Duncan. He took a trip to the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center during his visit and learned about the history of the town.
When asked about the recent shooting tragedy, in which three local youths shot and killed Christopher Lane, an Australian athlete who was staying in Duncan, Kolobaric said that he can see why Lane “fell in love with Duncan.” He also touched on the tragedy itself.
“From what I understand, it wasn’t targeting Australia or Australians,” Kolobaric said. “He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Kolobaric met with the family of Lane’s girlfriend, Sarah Harper, and said that the shooting was a tragedy for Lane’s family, as well as a tragedy in general.
