Playoffs in the works

As the college football season comes to a close, controversy as to “Who’s in?” the college football playoff always starts to arise.

The final college football playoff rankings were revealed on Sunday, Dec. 6. The college football playoff selection committee put Clemson as the top seed, Alabama as the two seed, Michigan State as the three seed and Oklahoma as the fourth seed.

Clemson will play Oklahoma in Miami in the Orange Bowl, and Alabama and Michigan State will play in Dallas in the Cotton Bowl. Both semi-final games will be played on New Year’s Eve.

After Michigan State beat undefeated Iowa in the Big 10 conference championship game, it became clear who would be in the playoffs. The problem came with ranking the top four teams.

Although Clemson is unbeaten, I think Alabama should have been put at the top spot.

With Head Coach Nick Saban, Heisman finalist Derrick Henry and their dominant defense, no one in the country can stop them.

Their only loss was to Ole Miss in September. The Crimson Tide lost a hard fought battle 43-37.

Something the playoff committee does take into consideration is how well a team improves throughout the year.

Last year this happened to Ohio State, who almost did not even make the playoffs after losing to Virginia Tech at the beginning of the season and ended up winning the national championship.

Ohio State lost in September but continued to improve throughout the year. The playoff committee really took that into consideration. That is why I was surprised that Alabama did not make the jump to the top seed. They looked like an overall better team, but Clemson is still undefeated.

Oklahoma should have been ranked third instead of the fourth ahead of Michigan State after beating three ranked teams in their final three games.

Oklahoma is the most complete team of all four playoff teams. They are strong at almost every position. With Baker Mayfield at quarterback, running backs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, wide receiver Sterling Shepard and a very dominant defense, Oklahoma will end up playing Alabama in the national championship game.

Oklahoma should also have extra motivation after losing to Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl 40-6 last year.

Oklahoma is the top seed in ESPN’s Football Power Index, and also according to it, they are predicted to win their semi-final game by two points.

Another thing the committee uses to determine who gets in, is to see if the team won their conference championship game.

Oklahoma did not play in championship weekend on Dec. 5, so not playing the extra game may have also pushed Michigan State forward past Oklahoma in the committee’s eyes, even though Oklahoma had already won their conference after beating Oklahoma State on Nov. 28.

The committee’s argument was that Michigan State “had a more complete resume.” The Big 10 was a better conference than the Big 12 this year, and Michigan State had a better loss than Oklahoma did. They also had a very impressive win over Iowa in their conference championship game.

Oklahoma is a very complete team, and has improved a lot since their loss in early October to Texas.

Now that everyone knows who is in, no one is sure who will take home the national championship trophy. This question will finally be answered on January 11.
