Staff Picks: Mocking Girl from Badlands- Badlands

Twenty-one-year-old Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, better known as Halsey, swept in like a hurricane with her new, and first, album “Badlands.”

This album features an electro pop sound with raw and graphic tales of her life. Some of the lyrics show the deep pain inside of her. The lyrics “Are you insane like me / been in pain like me” are a great display of those emotions from her song “Gasoline.”

“Badlands” showcases meaningful lyrics that make people feel confident or that they aren’t alone in their struggles.

The first song in the album is titled “Castle,” and it is the perfect opening to “Badlands.” It’s a lot like an opening to Halsey’s life where the “Castle” is her home. This track has a dark vibe to it, and I believe it has a much deeper meaning than what most people think.

One of the most popular songs on the album is “New Americana.” This is one of my favorites because of how relatable it is to society today. It talks about how we won’t conform to other people’s standards. The lyrics “So he vowed to be his husband at the altar,” speaks very loud and clear.

My absolute favorite song on “Badlands” is “Hurricane.” This song makes me feel like I am unpredictable and that I can accomplish anything. This song also contains important lyrics such as, “Don’t belong to no city / don’t belong to no man.” Sometimes we forget who we really are, and these lyrics are a reminder that I am my own person. They make me remember that I am special.

Altogether, this as an amazing start to Halsey’s career. “Badlands” definitely gets five stars.
