Upcoming video games previewed

2015 is a big year in the world of gaming. With the release of the PlayStation 4 and XBox One in 2013, there are plenty of new titles being released this year, and the gaming community has hyped them up. With games such as “Mortal Kombat X,” “Halo 5: Guardians” and “Bloodborne” coming out, the gaming community is braced for a year full of new titles.

“Bloodborne”

Console: PlayStation 4

Developer: From Software

Genre: Action, role-playing

“Bloodborne” is the newest title from notorious developers From Software, who developed the Souls series, “Dark Souls,” “Dark Souls II” and “Demon’s Souls.” The game follows the formula of the previous Souls games and yet adds its own flair as blocking, one of the most important features of the Souls games, has been taken out in favor of faster rolling and a new mechanic called strafing, moving side-to-side as a dodging maneuver. “Bloodborne” was released March 24, 2015.

“Halo 5: Guardians”

Console: Xbox One

Developer: 343 Industries

Genre: First-person shooter

“Halo 5: Guardians” is an upcoming first-person shooter and the newest addition to the popular Halo franchise. Halo 5 is the sequel to 2012’s Halo 4. The game has a release date set for sometime in the fall of this year.

“No Man’s Sky”

Console: PlayStation 4, PC

Developer: Hello Games

Genre: Adventure

“No Man’s Sky” is an upcoming space exploration game developed by British developers Hello Games, a small indie studio. “No Man’s Sky” is set in a procedurally generated universe, meaning that, instead of pre-rendered designs being in the game, it is generated based on an algorithm, a “self-contained step-by-step set of operations,” according to Wikipedia. “No Man’s Sky” can generate up to 16 quintillion different planets. That means there will be a planet no one in the game has discovered and never will discover. The objective of the game is to make it to the center of the galaxy. The PlayStation 4 version is set for release this year, with the PC version set for release next year.

“Mortal Kombat X”

Console: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Developer: NetherRealm Studios

Genre: Fighting

“Mortal Kombat X” is the tenth main title in the popular Mortal Kombat series, known for its extreme violence. “Mortal Kombat X” uses the energy meter found in the previous Mortal Kombat game, which is used to perform “x-rays,” which give you a view inside of the character’s body, showing organs burst and bones shatter. NetherRealm Studios have also ramped up the violence with the new fatalities, as they are more gruesome than in previous games. There is also a new type of fatality, a “quitality,” which triggers when a player attempts to quit a multiplayer game. “Mortal Kombat X” is slated for release April 14, 2015.

There are plenty of other games set for release this year, and gamers are just waiting to get their hands on these new titles.
